Whenever I follow a new theatre, I go for the option for making sure their retweets don't show up in my timeline. If their constant RTing of politics is more of an annoyance than their RTing of anything else is a joy, then I can highly recommend doing the same to these opera critics. You'll still get their own content, but not the RTs, and it's more foolproof than keyword-muting. You can do that? (I'm a very basic twitter user) Theatres endlessly retweeting wonderful reviews can drive me a bit mad, unless it's mine of course

I find Facebook itself a hideous mess and can't understand its appeal - though obviously millions use it. My sole reason for having an account is because my local rail users' group posts daily service updates and info there - but I could do without that if I had to. Quite apart from the issue of being unable to delete info from Facebook (I would never post any personal details anyway), the interface is chaotic and not intuitive. How on earth others navigate I can't imagine. Give me Twitter any day: it's not perfect but at least it's simple and succinct.

Please could you explain how to do this? I didn't know it was possible. Sure! Go the profile page of the offending party, look for the button on the right-hand side that says "following". Click on the three little dots next to that, and you get a dropdown menu, you want to select "turn off retweets". (If you're doing this through the mobile app, the three little dots are in the top right, that's the only difference though.) Brilliant. Many thanks for that. I have just done that for one critic & will see if I want to do the same for any others in the future. I think it's clear based on personal experience and what anyone can see from your posts you just think your'e entitled to live in a bubble where you don't have to acknoledge there are different views in the world- sorry but part of being an adult is dealing with that. It's pretty immature to believe you can just la la la your way through life and not have to at least acknowledge there are other viewpoints in the world. If posts are actually offensive report them. And to turn off RT's you click on the three dots next to the follow button, there's a drop down list and you click on it. Thanks for the RT information. I am well aware there are other viewpoints to mine but I'd rather not read them incessantly. I just want to use social media for theatre & opera discussions, not politics.

This morning I have gone into facebook and faced 12 "inspirational quotes" reposted by the same person. I have "unfollowed". I was tempted to unfriend them, but I know they suffer from depression and anxiety so I don't want to aggravate them.

Recently I did a community service thing (voluntary I should add, before HG attempts a joke) and got an email after saying photos of the event and updates on future events would (only) be on Instagram and Facebook neither of which I either use or have any intention of using. This assumption that everyone uses these things is irritating.

Curious I didn't have to sign a waiver for that, I had to sign a bunch of other health & safety and public liability things in advance. I set up a Twitter account a while ago as I thought it might be a good way of keeping up to date with fringe venues but I was rapidly swamped with content-free useless chit chat (and off-topic anti-Tory rants from one particular theatre AD).

I've just opened Facebook to see the comment
"He used a condom properly second time it's happened *angry face*" and "Urs is self-inflicted"
I don't think I need to add anything to that...

There is an interesting documentary about it on IPlayer now. It's two episode but they're short so I count it as on documentary.
