Not very good this. I left at half time. Would have left earlier if I had the chance. A bad day at the theatre. Saw Carey Mulligan in Girls and Boys and that just about scraped three stars and then got to this. Staging, subject matter, writing. Is there really a play here? And that wailing from Suranne Jones??!! Made worse in a manc accent. And this isn't mancist. My best friend is a manc and has that lovely drawl that sounds like David Lloyd. Suranne Jones doesn't. Not for me this one so I made my excuses and left early. I scored this one point, mainly as they all turned up and on time. What does mancist mean? I assume its connected to racist, sexist etc, but what then is manc? Or is it something only the coterie know? Manc is Manchester

You're wrong on several counts @parsley about Suranne Jones who is an immensely watchable and talented actress in the eyes of many, myself included. Her last London stage appearances were actually in Top Girls at Trafalgar Studios and Beautiful Thing at the Arts. She also had the lead role in Orlando at the Royal Exchange in Manchester. Hardly an actress to rest on her laurels. Suranne Jones was very good in Top Girls.

She's mainly a television actress (and that's not an insult in any way) so perhaps an Oscar isn't something she is aiming for. She has however won a BAFTA for her work. There are many well respected actresses who are still waiting for an Oscar nomination. Perhaps she's not interested in Shakespeare either. Doing Shakespeare doesn't make you a good actress.

I googled it and it did not come up with that. Is there a special search engine I should be using to read these posts.

You MIGHT be using a different Google to the rest of the world then. When I type Manc in Google it brings up Manchester. One step further and you will see that Suranne Jones hails from Manchester. One step further and you will see that reference to accents and places are made in the post. Then the jigsaw is pretty much complete.

Here is what page came up when I googled www.google.co.uk/search?q=mancist&oq=mancist&aqs=chrome..69i57.3641j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8
No mention of Manchester on that page, so I do not think I am using a different Google form the rest of the world.

Blimey, if I'd asked what "Mancist" meant and received an answer, I like to think I'd have responded more along the lines of "oh, I see, thank you" rather than spending the rest of my follow-up posts endlessly complaining about it.

Jasper isn't great at acronyms either. I wish I had the energy (I have the time, obviously) for full words.

My mum has decided she wants to see this Mother’s Day weekend, despite the subject matter. Does anyone know if the day seats are one or two per person?

Seems an age since I booked, honestly was tempted to give it a miss, the thought of a wet trudge through central London held little appeal after a lazy day catching up with iPlayer. (is’nt the acting in Mum astounding, a masterclass in performing with silence)
Now on the train, interest piqued again, do like a dark play and believe they don’t get much darker than this.

Oh dear. This isn't very good at all.
Not sure what made the TRH management people would flock to this. It is a very, very average play if I am kind. Despite it being about a serial killer there is next to no tension and little sympathy for the victims.
The playwright needs to show a lot more and tell a lot less. Much of this play consists of the three speaking characters talking to the audience in a Brecht-lite mode, it takes abour forty-five minutes before one addresses a word to another.
The killer is an insufferable prat, more the evil of banality than the banality of evil. But challenged for the gold medal by the insufferable psychiatrist or lecturer or whatever she is. Smug moralising for the armchair masses.
A total turkey.

joem, agree wholeheartedly, one of those times I should have stuck with my original instinct and carried on watching iPlayer. As if 5 minutes with the mother would untangle a lifetime of repression.

Well I liked this despite the unsavoury subject matter and Jason Watkins was a knock out

Well I liked this despite the unsavoury subject matter and Jason Watkins was a knock out Did you hear the phone going off during the Nancy/Ralph meeting? I liked the play for it's interesting (although quite shallow) examination of psychopathy and for pulling no punches but the audience was abysmal.

Didn't hear the phone but during the first act there was lady with a coughing fit on the end of a row who really should have left the auditorium !

I enjoy a good dark thriller as much as the next person, but this really didn't do anything for me. It seemed to be aiming for sophisticated psychodrama, but only managed late night channel five thriller: From the dark visuals, scratchy video and colourless sparse sets to the music and sound effects that pointed out each emotion the audience should feel, it just felt uninspired.
The script was frustrating too. I assume that the writer did lots of research, but the killer's tics and mannerisms screamed cliche. Similarly the 'scientific' bits just didn't feel believable. I wasn't keen on the Royal Court's recent similar Girls and Boys, but that was much better than this.
The only real highlight was the acting which was good.
One final note; the audience seemed unusually noisy. Lots of crumpling packets of sweets, bottles of water, and coming & going from the auditorium.

Just wrote a really long review and then accidently deleted it. So, to sum up, Parsley style:
Jason owns the show, he gives a great performance.
Surrane was fairly one note but good enough.
We didn't actually need the Mother at all. The story between the killer and the interviewer was so interesting and intriguing, alongside her talking about the science behind the mind of a killer, I actually found the mother stuff broke us away from that.
Set and lighting fine.
Shoutout to the two police officers and the little girl who did a great job of not looking bored carrying chairs on and off and sitting in the corner of the stage for 20 minutes at a time.
It was fine, would of much more enjoyed just the killer and interviewer personally. If you can get a cheap seat, pop along.

Quick autographing question. Does anyone know if Surrane normally comes out of the stage door after matinees? I've seen several Instagram pictures of Surrane at stage door seemingly between shows as it's daylight and she looks like she's just popped out to say hi rather than just arrived, so yeah it's seems like she does in these instances.

This play was SO dated! It was the worse kind of theatre that just gives you a story, but doesn't try and add any insights etc...and let's face it, this play was so predictable. Having said that, the acting was strong from Jason and Suranne was ok. I really was not impressed by Nina though.

Well I didn’t think it was possible, but it actually happened. Tickets for sale on a Facebook buy/sell group because someone thought it was Disney’s Frozen. I sometimes wonder how these people function in society. (No personal information is in the attached screenshot and I have nothing to do with the actual sale, I just couldn’t believe my eyes)

Hope she recovers soon. This really was a turkey but I for one don't see a reason to doubt Suranne Jones' honesty or the professional integrity of her medical practitioner.

Just seen this over on twitter. I hope she has some time off to recover now. Likewise I don't doubt this- there's no sense in missing the last couple after doing most of the rest of it, sometimes however life and illness happens.
