That controlled explosion went off whilst a guy was reporting live from Manchester on BBC News. Pretty frightening to watch/hear, and people in the surrounding areas were rather scared, but thankfully the word of a controlled explosion had spread quick enough just before it happened.

It would be useful if people posted only official news sources, rather than twitter rumours/amateur news sites. Fake news is bad enough without people treating all sources as equal. The thing is, Greater Manchester Police are using Twitter to get information out. This means Twitter links are inevitable.

Knowing the place, it seems like it was in public area just outside the venue timed for the end of the concert, but which had overrun slightly. This would be a concert which was going to have a high proportion of young women and gay men and that is likely to be one possible area of enquiry as to motive, I was reporting from what was happening on BBC news or is the BBC not official enough?

BBC and GMP are official, look back and you can see some unverifiable sources though.

Interesting. They must've had some suspicions. Better to be safe than sorry, I guess.

So sad tonight. Attacking kids seems a whole new level to me. Must have been absolutely terrifying and for those at the hotel waiting to be reunited with guardians I can't grasp what the emotional impact on them will be of things they've seen tonight

Hearing on Sky News, coming out on US networks that this was a suicide bomber, this has been uncolabrated though by British sources.

The Independent are reporting that all election campaigning is suspended Yes I saw that. Some politicians, who shall not be named, will use it for sickening point scoring in the meantime, though.

I can fully understand why Phantom has reacted as strongly as he has. I wish it was as easy as saying enough is enough but the solution to Islamist terrorism does not lie with us or any action we can take. Changing a culture of hatred, violence and blinkered thinking is something we cannot enforce.
We do have to stop tolerating any apologists for this sort of mentality. Evil has to be called out for what it is.
If this incident is proven to be a suicide bomber, it is the sort of attack that is nigh-on impossible to prevent. That is the reality of the situation. Someone walking up to a concert venue and waiting for people to start leaving before detonating is very hard to intercept unless you get some very, very good intelligence early enough.
I really wish there was a solution but I just cannot see one.

I am personally going to say this. Racism is racism. If it's a suicide bomber or whether it's as banning Muslims. Or has no one watched Clybourne Park ? But I hope it this does not become a version of Europe in the early 1930's. The bombings worry me but not as much as us vs them .

It is not racist to condemn Islamism. It is a perverted interpretation of Islam. It is important not to blame Islam for the activities of Islamists. However we should not be afraid of calling it out for what it is. It is one of the most evil ways of thinking in the world today.

Condemning an entire religion for the actions of so few would make about as much sense as condemning the male gender for the fact that the vast majority of terrorist attacks, mass shootings, murders etc. are committed by men. Muslims themselves have been targeted victims of these attacks in other countries. Whilst we need to ensure that the specific evil, radical rhetoric spewed by a subset of this religion is widely condemned, spreading hate to millions of innocent people does nothing except cause stuff like this to happen down the line.
I was at Ariana's concert two years ago in Manchester Arena. I am sick to my stomach. Security needs to be stepped up at concert venues, theatres and quite frankly everywhere. Unfortunately, we do not live in the world we lived in five years ago where these things wouldn't even be at the back of your mind. I am aware that this attack did not happen inside the arena, but seemingly in the foyer, but security measures can still be in place and need to be in place.
My thoughts are with the injured, family and friends of the dead and Ariana herself who is just a young woman and must be going through so much right now.

Such is the layout of the venue and it's connection with Victoria Station a terrorist could have as much impact without even being in the immediate vicinity. The place holds 21000 and it was full last night. You can't clear that many people out of a venue without having huge volumes of people in the street, on the station. It could have been anywhere, sadly. I don't know how this can be solved other than even more/better intelligence but even our amazing intelligence services can't always prevent individuals working alone.

Part of me thinks that stopping the spreading of photos and videos of the incidents would be at least a minor help. Obviously they will be spread on social media and nobody can stop that but what is the use of seeing videos of young children/teenagers screaming and running on the news? To build awareness to the general public who can do absolutely nothing to stop this? I have avoided looking at any photos/videos and I'm still fully aware of how barbaric what has happened is. In my mind, all showing this stuff over and over on news channels does is show potential terrorists what is possible for them and emboldens them. Would we have had so many attacks happening over the last few years if they hadn't all been SO widely publicized?
What's more, I worry about the effect that seeing these images on a regular basis is having on the mental health of the public. It has not been that long that we have had television and the internet and the internet on our phones. I don't see how being unable to avoid these images is going to do anything to help depression and depression can lead to extremely negative consequences, where people feel the need to hurt themselves and occasionally others. It just seems like a vicious, vicious cycle. Right now, every time I go to search for something on Twitter I am faced with an autoplay video of people running from the explosion. Who is this helping?

I mean u could argue the U.K. sending unmanned planes to kill indiscriminately and generally many many innocent muslims is a bit of a sh*tter too. Far more people die in those than in terrorist attacks in the U.K. Does that make us pervertted and evil?

Horrified, the arena is the sister venue to where I work and I have friends and colleagues who would have been working on the show.
My deepest sympathies lie with those injured, the loved ones of those killed and those still missing.
I despair for the state of the world. There isn't any obvious solutions to the hatred that causes such atrocities, but adding to the hatred by calling out entire sections of the population will not help.
