Get thee to a barber.Now, you see, I read it like that the first time too. But on second reading, Some Lovers features Ben Richards, Arran Kavanagh, Gemma Wardle and Jenna Innes. Oliver Tompsett is in a concert performance of Charles Miller music. Agreed on the ancient photo though! |

Much as I'm looking forward to seeing this show, it has made me pretty angry. Page to Stage sets itself up as being about supporting the development of new musical theatre. How are any new musical theatre writers supposed to ever get their work heard when the show that gets picked as the main piece in the festival is by Burt Bacharach?!? You might as well let Paul McCartney win an upcoming songwriter competition. There is almost no development process in the UK for new musicals, which is why New York is full of interesting new musical theatre and London has The Wind in the Willows. For one of the only opportunities that exists to be monopolised by established figures is really unfortunate. I know there are brief outings in the festival for a couple of new pieces by unknowns, but there really is no place for someone with 60 odd years experience in a festival such as this.

This I agree with. Interesting that Big Fish will be shown at The Other Palace. As much as I want to see it, I thought the new set up was to support NEW British musicals and writers? No?

I went last Friday and I enjoyed it. Its very much Last 5 Years esque and the music is quintessentially Bacharach. Unfortunately lots of the songs blended together for me and were so similar that as soon as id enjoyed one tune I couldn't pick it out from the next one.
It felt very off-broadway and was nice to see a fully staged new musical, something I feel we don't get much of but I think we're seeing more of now. If you can catch it and enjoy Bacharach's style of music go see it.

Saw it last week and was rather underwhelmed I'm afraid.
No 'plot' to speak of and a lot of the songs felt similar in style. The 1.5 hours without interval dragged at times.
Some of the vocals also were not great.
Came away humming 'Say a little prayer' and 'I'll never fall in love again'!

Thank you both for your thoughts! I enjoyed The Last 5 Years and enjoy Bacharach's style so I might take a gamble on it at the weekend. Useful to know the running time and lack of interval, thanks again! 😁
