Is this show worth booking ahead full-price? Now that the damp squib has landed on the chessboard, I need to fill one more slot for my trip in May and this is the only new show that presently tickles me.
I love dancing on stage, but aren't really big on ballroom dancing and all those dancing shows on telly completely passed me by. I haven't seen the original Strictly Ballroom movie either. Something to remedy perhaps.

Hmmm, okay, thanks Monkey. Will think about it. Not even I could do BOOH twice in one day and otherwise offerings look a bit dire in May. So annoyed that The Rink is falling through the cracks between my trips.

Sorry if that has already been covered - is there an original score for this? Or is it all old pop songs (so basically a jukebox musical)?

In Leeds there was both - a selection of old pop songs including the ones used in the film, plus a handful of new songs. The new songs - all of them - are terrible.

From what I saw yesterday (there's film of it on officiallondontheatre.co.uk, too) it's big ballroom dance numbers and costumes to match. There is also a decent story about Spanish family culture in Australia too, and overcoming a tyrannical dance organiser's rule. So, maybe one to consider. I thought the show in Leeds didn't quite work, but the choreography and costumes were spectacular.

I spy Charlotte Gooch, who is the main reason I want to see this, though I think I'll be waiting till the initial rush has died down.

I enjoyed the Leeds production, except the ending fell surprisingly flat - the big moment of scott rebelling and such was all a bit fragmented and didn't have much impact, but some great moments.

I haven't seen the movie but this show seems fabulous! Is anybody else excited for this? I'm going to see it on Easter Monday and can't wait! 💃

The film is one of my all time favourites so I jumped at this. I do hope I’m not disappointed. I had preview tickets originally which were cancelled so have re-booked for the first week in May.

Sorry if that has already been covered - is there an original score for this? Or is it all old pop songs (so basically a jukebox musical)? I saw this in Sydney a few years back and don’t recall their being any songs I recognised. There also was very little dancing for a show with that name and no large cast set pieces. I hadn’t seen the film, so there might have been songs from there, as well as originals. I’m going to guess it had quite a makeover before coming to the UK. It definitely needs working to appeal to the Strictly/42nd Street type audience.

There are several set pieces, the Paso Doble sequence, where Fran’s dad shows Scott how to do a PROPER Paso being the best.
It’s a fab show. I just hope Will Young isn’t going to spoil it.

the Paso Doble sequence, where Fran’s dad shows Scott how to do a PROPER Paso being the best. Rapturous applause in Leeds for that. The stars, and Will Young, will be on Graham Norton's Radio 2 show tomorrow. Guests are usually after 11.30am.

So we now know that all the original songs from the Leeds run have been ditched.

What a shame if they have changed it. I loved it in Leeds, it was fantastic

So we now know that all the original songs from the Leeds run have been ditched. I could understand that if they’re replacing them with known songs. None of the original stuff was that memorable, the spectacle of the show was what made it good in Leeds. If theyre going for the SCD crowd then turning it into Jukebox seems like a solid, if cynical plan.

And Will Young is not just a band leader, he also described himself as the narrator.

Just wondering, are the UK productions based in Australia? Is everyone including Will Young going to be doing an OTT Aussie accent?
Its just the very Australian tone and humour of the film is one of the things I love so much about it, and I'm not sure if I can imagine it working on stage.

Yes it was set in Australia in Leeds. Can’t imagine them changing it, it’s pretty fundamental to the humour.

Interesting interview on Londontheatre.co.uk with Zizi Strallen. She talks a fair bit about the changes they've made from the Leeds production, including her character no longer singing at all, and the songs that are in it.

It sounds like they’re doing a Dirty Dancing by having the main characters not sing.

Will Young is on Sunday Brunch, channel 4+1 to talk about the show.
I'm going on Friday, not sure if it's going to be for me. I love the film, but I don't like the sound of Will's role in it. We'll see.

Being a huge fan of two of the biggest dance shows of the past year 42nd Street and American in Paris, this feels like it should be right up my street. But for some reason, other than the two leads, I'm in no rush.

So, confirmed it’s now 80’s jukebox and it sounds like most of them are going to be sung by WY according to the Graham Norton radio interview.
Will Young’s Strictly Ballroom.
Evergreen - The Will Young Musical will be along shortly.

Never got the chance to see this in Leeds but I'd heard many good things so I booked for London. I get that chances are sometimes necessary for transfers but it's starting to sound like a completely different show. I'm sure I'll still enjoy it, in all honesty I'm mainly going for the dancing and that doesn't sound like it's changed much at all.

We saw the show in Leeds, so pleased as it sounds completely different to the show we saw. Too many changes in my opinion. Not planning on seeing it.
