Also saw this in Leeds and really enjoyed it. I won’t be seeing this production mainly because Will Young is in it. If it ever tours I might consider seeing it again.

Show stop... plumbing issue on stage apparently. Gone straight to interval while they try to fix it. Was really rather enjoying it up til then!

First preview just halted due to an onstage plumbing issue. Interval brought forward, they'll advise shortly if they can continue! 🤞

Yeah I was thinking that, it was going really smoothly so something was bound to happen! I'm trying to listen into the people on walkie talkies to guage what's happening but I'm failing spectacularly 😕

Jonny Labey's Instagram story confirms the first preview was cancelled - not the start they'd have hoped for.

It's a shame as it was going really well until that point. I think it might be my fault as I had been thinking 'come on, we need an interval now', and then tragedy struck 😁 I did enjoy it but at the same time, calling it a musical is pretty cheeky. It's half a 'Will Young covers concert' and half a comedy play. Will did give a good performance but if you don't like his voice you're going to struggle as no-one else does any solo singing. But the cast had a good energy and the costumes were good (bonus points to whover put Jonny Labey in a vest and really tight black trousers). I'm just not sure I'm fussed about seeing the second half.

It's half a 'Will Young covers concert' and half a comedy play. Yep, pretty much. But thankfully I do like Will's voice and I'm a sucker for a vest/tight trouser combo when they're sprayed on a body like that. Oh and he can dance a bit too. Could have done with Will's sequin suit being slightly *less* sprayed on... but I may be in a minority there! Seriously - I spent half my time wondering why they'd mucked about so much with the Leeds production and the rest thoroughly enjoying myself. Will definitely go back - from what I remember in Leeds (and from the film of course) the best was.very much still to come.

Just remembered...
When the Theatre Manager came on to break the bad news, as soon as he uttered the word “cancelled” a worman’s voice shouted out “but it’s Sheilagh’s (Shirley’s? Something like that) birthday” (by the sounds of it they’d been celebrating it rather diligently).
Within seconds the whole theatre was singing happy birthday to her. When we’d finished, on he went with his announcement.
Surreal.

Just got back from seeing 1/2 the show. We were enjoying it but don't really think Will Young's character is needed, half the time it seemed like he was just wandering around getting in the way. Also really missing a female voice in the songs-Will can definitely sing but it's missing something. I do agree that calling it a musical is rather cheeky.
There's also just too much going on onstage all the time-constant movement, people wheeling around spotlights, it's not needed. The stage isn't that big anyway, they're all pushed to the front due to the band being onstage. Hopefully they'll lose a bit of the excess in previews so by the time I get to go again it won't be so messy!

Sounds as if they've ruined it for the sake of casting a star name. So glad I got to see the original version in Leeds

I was just thinking the same thing as richey I don't remember much about the show in Leeds but it definitely felt like a musical and I think I enjoyed it. Don't think I'll be rushing to see this.

Will Young’s Strictly Ballroom. Evergreen - The Will Young Musical will be along shortly. I did enjoy it but at the same time, calling it a musical is pretty cheeky. It's half a 'Will Young covers concert' and half a comedy play. Will did give a good performance but if you don't like his voice you're going to struggle as no-one else does any solo singing. Told you so 😐

Why on earth isn’t this just a proper musical with new songs written for it? Such a wasted opportunity. Can’t believe they have so desperately gone down the will Young route. What will happen when he leaves? Just some random guy singing all the songs to a bemused audiences.

Well, I was also there tonight, pretty unbelievable turn of events everything coming to a close a couple of minutes before the interval. I wonder how most of the audience will feel once they've sobered up and realise they only saw half of the show. Apologies, but it was pretty clear a lot of the audience were at least half in the bag, as proven by Happy Birthday being sang before the guy had even explained why on earth the show was coming to a close.
The show was two halves for me. A lot of it was pretty much dead on for the film, which I would have loved. But my god, Will Young does not go away, he's constantly there, shadowing people, and getting in their way a lot of the time. I have no idea why he needs to be right next to people as they are dancing, or needs to shadow a character when they are having a quieter, intimate moment. It's all too much, and I was cringing a lot of the time, especially as he was half dancing or jumping. And for a long time he was wearing a dress on a hanger over his neck, for a reason I do not know. He could be taken out of the show, he's really not necessary. But please don't tell his fans, some of which were sitting in front of me in the dress circle, and I do not exaggerate in saying they were pretty much wetting themselves with excitement from the off. For me, he's ruining it all and I would love to hear at least one other cast members voice, especially a woman's on Time After Time. It makes zero sense having him sing everything, the Will Young fans who were in the house were all delighted, I wanted a bit more of a variety.
Also, the dancers are too squashed together, there's not many couples, but they were bumping into each other. I think they should remove the band from the stage and spread the set out. The dance will have more impact, especially in the parts where he breaks loose, if it's given more room.Right now it's too small, it feels they are dancing small and contained.

What will happen when he leaves? Just some random guy singing all the songs to a bemused audiences. There were some original songs in the version of the show that played in Leeds last year, as well as the (expected) collection of familiar pop hits. The original songs were atrocious. Yes, all of them. That said, it didn't need to be transformed into a play-with-music vehicle for Will Young. It needed a good new score, and original songs all the way through instead of a half-and-half mixture of new and old music. There was a lot of good in the show - the staging and choreography were excellent, and so were most of the performers. It was fixable, but I don't think this is the way to fix it... not that I'll be seeing it again, because having suffered through Will Young's performance in 'Cabaret' I'm basically allergic to him now.

Did they manage to work in Will Young's hit songs as well, or is it just cover versions?

Oh dear, I’m glad I haven’t forked out for this. Despite liking Mr Young if I wanted a Will Young show I’d go to his concerts. However having done that many a time I know how erm vocal his fans can be...probably give this one a wide berth. A shame as I adore the film.

The trouble is, you go to another show and you don't like someone's singing voice, you get to hear a lot of other cast members sing. In this one, if you're not enjoying how Will sings, you're screwed. That's not to mention that he's just in the way all of the time, even touching the dancers as they are dancing. For me it just doesn't work at all.

The problem is, you build a show around one singer, what happens when they are out of the show? Yes there will be an understudy but I'm not quite sure they've thought this through. How long is Will Young contracted for?

Regretting booking for this... Did so some time back on the strength of some positive reviews on here when it was in Leeds, waaay before Will Young was written into it. Trouble is, now I’ve bought the tickets it’s too late to leave right now...

Did they manage to work in Will Young's hit songs as well, or is it just cover versions? That just looks like they've picked as many songs with 'dance' in the title. Dread to think what Will will sound like attempting Whitney and Bowie
