Yes, I was out at 9,30 pm. The Almeida website says: Additional information
The running time is approximately 2 hours and 5 minutes including a 15 minute interval.

So it's a terrible production and a faint risk, should i just stay home?

I will ponder thanks, am not sure i can actually let a theatre ticket go to waste even if the train fare does cost more than the ticket so i could pretend that staying home was really a saving.

I saw the 1993 production at the Court and this one is a LOT better. You make not like the material (though my guest and I did - A LOT), but I wouldn't pass up a chance to go.

I on the other hand would suggest passing on the chance to go, like a shot

Split the difference and leave at the interval (have a back-up plan for something else to shoot off to if so) if it's really not your thing?
I'm due to see it this week and having originally not fancied it but been persuaded by the professional reviews, the comments on here have left me wondering what to expect; however, I'm looking forward to making up my own mind - evidently a marmite play, or perhaps production.

I think I've booked mid week after work so it's the travel cost implications as much as anything, if it was a Saturday I could fit something else in but it's train and tube costs to get to the almeida. I admit to being quite curious now.

I agree - this is a better production than the 1993 which (at least in my recollection) was slow and self-important - but then I liked this production, I laughed a couple of times and thought there were a couple of 'wow' moments to weigh against the 'meh' and 'heh' ones. IMO this is MUCH better than Obsession, if you are looking at this on an imaginary sliding scale of badness. But I was feeling mellow after the nice meal at Radici, so that did help.

Oh what a horrible thing they have done to a very good cast in a very good play. Saw it this afternoon. How sad. I've never seen it before and was as disappointed as everyone else here with the opening scenes. Then I realised it was the ridiculous scene-changes that were crippling it. It's a film, it flows. If it stops, it falls to bits. 4 star play, 1 star production. Will blog later in the week, I think, when I've calmed down. Well you can work out by the time I'm writing this that I didn't last the course. At the interval, having checked my watch every five minutes, I decided enough was enough. I got the message, appreciated the metaphors and image patterns, liked the acting but frankly I was bored. And being boring in the London theatre , well, there is no excuse. I'm quoting you TM because I haven't seen the play before nor any of his other work as far as I know but it is interesting to learn that other productions have done better. I think the acting was good, espesh Loftus but hey, this is London, we have probably ten other actors per part that can do this and I expect the acting to be good. Actors are often not allowed to say what they feel and they make some stuff look better than it is and they have to pay the rent too. God bless 'em.

Ok, so just read thru and realised I missed the Shakespearean moment in the second half. What a shame.....

Saw this tonight. Dear Lord I thought it was freaking terrible. Pretentious, nonsensical, didn't care for any character or situation, terrible dialogue, bland scenery. Indira Varma OK. Julian Ovenden miscast. Clifford actor did a bad American accent. Other characters over-acted. Terrible waste of the 400 odd extras who did 'extras' acting. Couldn't wait for it to end. A real stinker in my opinion.

Saw it on Saturday and still at a loss to know what to make of it though maybe "Curate's Egg" is the best brief summary. Somehow it managed to seem long despite being relatively short - and that was something I took into account when booking at all, especially for an evening performance. It was very clever and amusing in parts and vile in others but nothing in particular much of the time, possibly not helped by lack of credibility. There would be a fascinating play in the subject of someone whose experience becomes the property of, and rewritten by the media - though doubtless it has already been done multiple times - but this does not follow that line. Still, for my first, cautious return visit to the Almeida after a particularly dire season several years ago, when regardless of what I saw, I either fell asleep or hated the play and left at the interval, I didn't fare too badly: paid £10, stayed awake throughout (I think!) and made it to the end.

stayed awake throughout (I think!) and made it to the end. Sometimes there's a lot to be said for managing that.

One of the songs was Where Or When, which is usually by Ketty Lester but this was a different arrangement. I don't know how helpful that is...
I really enjoyed the play anyway. It was a bit obtuse but the performances were great and I was fully engaged for the duration. Sometimes that's all you can really ask of a show.

Saw this yesterday. To be honest, I expected something really bad but I have to admit I quite liked it (however, the gentleman seated next to me admitted he was tempted to leave at the interval but he eventually decided to stay). Loved Aisling Loftus' character. Not too convinced by Julian Ovenden though, I agree he's miscast.
PS Oh, and I finally saw the red-haired usher (or perhaps this should go into the "Famous people..." thread).

So if i take myself some nice squashed sandwiches to put me in a good mood ;O) I recommend beetroot and silver skin onions. Three of us went to the matinee Saturday, 2/3 wanted to leave at the interval but didn't. 1/3 thought it was OK. Curate's egg sums it up, despite the stellar acting. But, as I've commented elsewhere, too much sitting at Japanese tables almost on the floor, affecting sight lines, and a part where 3 couples hold separate conversations simultaneously necessitating the missing of 2 of them.

You are far fancier sandwiches than I do!
My enthusiasm for this is pretty low.

Maybe it was going in with expectations suitably lowered, but I quite enjoyed this. I'm not sure I got entirely what it was trying to achieve - beyond the obvious - or that it succeeded, but it didn't bore me.

Well will never know now if i'd have survived the gore scene since I went, struggled through to interval and then feeling terribly ill thought staying would be plain stupid so left, I did do several stop and pause on the way back to the station but since I hadn't exactly enjoyed it seemed more sensible to get home to bed, whether I would have liked it better if I hadn't felt so awful and therefore trapped who knows. I've read a spoiler somewhere on this thread about what happens in the second half but can't say it shed much light, I think I probably missed every metaphor or whatever that was going on and was pretty lost.

Thanks Lynette, feeling better today, I get this inner ear infection which effects my balance and thus makes me feel like i've just come off some terrible spinning tea cups ride, felt ok in the day so went and then got worse (I think knowing there is no easy exit without inconveniencing people makes me bit stressed and therefore worse) plus the potential gore didn't help. Am hoping it's not like last summer where I had a bad run and a lot of theatre close together which was a bit fraught.
Frankly I think my body needs to get a grip and accept i like sitting in the dark, packed in with people, watching other people who may or may not bleed all over the stage.
