Has she ever done stage work before? I thought she was only a presenter... It was after Strictly that people realised she could really dance quite well. Singing though, unknown! She has sung more in public lately.

Has anyone seen Jessie Wallace as Mama Morton, she pretty much the main reason I am looking forward to this in a couple of weeks? Yes - I saw both her and her understudy during the Newcastle run. Have to say I wasn't impressed at all with Jessie's performance. Her singing was ok - she struggled with the low notes and shouted the higher ones - but her acting was dreadful. During 'When you're good to mamma' she looked bored and seemed to be just going through the motions. She redeemed herself in 'Class' but was definitely outsung by Velma. Her understudy (sorry, can't remember her name offhand, Ellie Mitchell I think) was terrific, and sang & acted superbly! However, Jessie was only on for 6 performances during the two-week Newcastle run and seems to have been absent in Nottingham too going by the reviews.

Mica is brilliant, would much rather see her than Jesse Wallace or Sam Bailey!

I caught this a few months back. I hadn't seen it live before, but loved the movie. Overall, I thought it was enjoyable but it didn't give me the 'wow' factor I was hoping for. I thought both Sophie Carmen Jones and Hayley Tamaddon were great, though Hayley's accent wavered. Wasn't too sold on John Partridge as Billy Flynn, though apart from 'both reached for the Gun' I find the character to be a bit insipid, or maybe just Richard Gere's interpretation! I didn't mind Sam Bailey as Momma Morton- she was suitably sassy, though I think I'd prefer Mica Paris, as mentioned above. Mary Sunshine was hilarious. The stage felt quite cramped at times and I don't think the dancers were best served by that. Certainly enjoyable overall- just my expectations may have been too high.

I'm not a soap watcher so the "star names" were not a draw for me but I thought Jessie Wallace was the standout performer alongside Sophie Carmen-Jones as Velma. Wallace has a surprisingly good singing voice, strong with a lovely tone and her acting, sass and stage presence also impressed. A well cast Mama Morton.

Wasn't sure where to put this post but Mel B is joining the Chicago cast!!
This is AMAZING casting! I love Mel B and would love to see her do a musical in London! I wonder what role she'll play?

^ Just to clarify, this is for an as-of-yet unannounced role in the Broadway production. I imagine as Mama Morton, I think the part would suit her well vocally.

First role that comes to mind for her would be Mamma Morton. Just can't really see her as a Velma or Roxie. Footage of her as Mimi in Rent is really not good, but that was also 12 years ago. I'm sure she has a considerable profile in America thanks to the Spice Girls but I should think that her being on America's Got Talent has boosted that considerably. Smart move to put her on Broadway!

That's quite an upgrade to go from panto with Rylan to starring on Broadway! Seems weird that they say that the role she's playing is "to be announced soon". But then again it IS Chicago, it's always being plagued with stunt casting so I guess the role doesn't matter. *Brings back memories of seeing it with Billy Ray Cyrus... :/*

I think she'll be Mamma Morton too. I'd like to see her in a musical over here thigh, especially after her judging on the X Factor

Dont get why they didn't say which role she was playing in the first place. With the amount of stunt casting they do, were they just waiting to see which role became available for her to slide into first?

I really thought she would be playing the role of 'Mama' but Roxy is interesting casting, I don't plan to be in NYC till May so will not see this (and it would be unlikely I would want to go see Chicago when I have other shows I would like to see).
It's a 8 week run and sure will boost sales, its good casting but I am little unsure it should be for 'Roxy' but I look forward to reviews and dogey Youtube footage!

I'd like to hear what she actually, you know, sounds like, before proclaiming it as amazing casting.

I'd like to hear what she actually, you know, sounds like, before proclaiming it as amazing casting. Okay maybe I exaggerated but I meant that, in my eyes, this was great casting that would make me visit the show to see her in that role. I am personally excited by the casting news as I am a big Mel B Dan.

Is there any celebrity casting that has happened this year that you haven't got bonkersly excited about?

Is there any celebrity casting that has happened this year that you haven't got bonkersly excited about? Yes. There have been. Multiple actually. Usually I love seeing celebrities who I like on stage and half the time the celebrities performing are actual performers/singers/actors. I dont visit EVERY show where there is a celebrity in it but I just express my delight when a celeb I like goes into a show. I usually always visit a show because I want to see the SHOW but half the time there is a celebrity in the show meaning it's an added bonus. I'm not going to not visit a show just because there isn't a celeb involved. The Girls is a prime example of how they haven't done celebrity/stunt casting but it is still a show people want to see and the cast still work really well together and play their parts brilliantly. In a nutshell the answer to your quesrion Is yes. I really don't get excited by every piece of celebrity casting...

She did Mimi on Broadway for a limited run back in the day... not a fan of her as an actress in truth. I love The Spice Girls, they are forever iconic, but of the five of them, she needs to leave the stage work to Mel C.

I love The Spice Girls, perhaps too much as I sat through Vivaforever but this is unnacaptable to me (her singing in RENT and breaking character)

Honestly, I think there are worse shows for her to break character in than Chicago. Besides it was her final night, so can't say I'm surprised.

This made me so mad. Yes there are worse shows to do it in. But I'd be furious if I'd been in the audience. I'm watching. Chicago, not Mel B making a prat of herself
