I finally sent off a first draft of my play to my producer/collaborator. It feels like a very long road to get this far, and now I'm going to sleep for a week*
*not actually as I have to go to work tomorrow. But metaphorically.

What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare.
I spent part of my dinner/lunch hour communing with nature, standing on the riverbank watching the recently arrived swifts, surrounded by people who only had eyes for their smartphones.

I was *so* close to liking that tweet, as I do love a good riverbank, but I can't be dealing with smartphone snobbery. Someone could be chatting with a geographically-distant loved one, or they could be reading a work of great literature, or they could be taking part in a great national birdwatching event, or they could just be hammering out opinions on a theatre discussion board, and none of that is inherently "bad" or "a shame" or "the downfall of society" or whatever. I spend at least two hours a day out walking through leafy green streets and parks, and I still use my phone to help me identify birdsong or take pictures of particularly lovely plants.

The other weekend I went up to Jacksons Lane for a show. Beforehand I went for a wander in Highgate Woods. A woman was heading towards me with her (about) 12 year old daughter. She saw her looking at her watch. “Are you playing a game?” “What?” “You can stop that immediately – you are in the real world now.”

Bought a secondhand copy of "Razzle Dazzle" on Amazon Marketplace for £1. Arrived today. In better condition than many "new" books I've been sold. Very pleased. Also got a nice mention in the Sunday Times Money section yesterday. #chuffed. As a teenager, I got hold of a secondhand copy of 'Razzle' once. Don't recommend that........

Urgh, I hate days like today. I do freelance work and after having finished a job three weeks ago I now have three possible jobs that I can pretty much pick from and one that I would really like to do but think the chances of doing are tiny. One's a six week job which is abroad and would be really fun. Another is a 7 month job over here which I think I would enjoy but it's not definitely my job, only "highly likely" if my friend suggests me. Then there's a job I know nothing about but it's working with someone I get on with really well and would be my job if she gets the job. The final job is a dream job but I don't see it happening and don't know if I can hang around turning down actual work in the hope I get it. I hate making decisions. The six week job that needs an answer tomorrow and I don't want to say no and then not get one of the others.

What I hate today: People who send an email to a huge list of recipients and start the message "@SomePerson'sName" to indicate that it's for that single recipient only.

A very different day than was planned but productive nevertheless. Our power was due to be off most of the day as SP Energy are replacing telegraph poles further down the lane and as it's our wedding anniversary we decided to make use of a voucher we had for the cafe at Devils Bridge Steam Railway, followed by a walk down to the waterfalls. (Oh yeah, we know how to paaarrtaayyy....) Then, last night, I had an email to say that the woodburner and crate of logs that I expected to be delivered tomorrow was actually turning up today, so planned excursion cancelled. Delivery duly arrived at mid-day, lovely driver helped us push the stove crate (about 80kgs) up our short but quite steep drive, and set the log crate down out of the way of any tractors - we live next door to a farm and have a shared access driveway.. We managed to manhandle the stove up three steps and into the hallway and then had fun wheelbarrowing the logs from lane to log store, about a dozen barrowfulls in all! Crate has been dismantled and the wood will be used to finish off the home-made log store. Hopefully the stove will be installed either tomorrow or Thursday. It's been the most exciting wedding anniversary for years!!

Time to say goodbye... Soon to be renamed ‘Heinz Sandwich Cream’... End of an era.

If that's true, @caiaphas, I'm surprised they're still allowed to use the word "cream". Haven't had this for years and didn't even know it still existed.

Time to say goodbye... Soon to be renamed ‘Heinz Sandwich Cream’... End of an era. Why? What is the point changing it? I expect they have paid someone a fantastic amount of money to come up with this!

Presumably more people are using it in sandwiches than on salads.
It makes me wonder if, having eaten them from a plate for years, I might have been misusing oven chips.

Is there even such a thing as a slow news week anymore, in this dystopian hellscape we find ourselves living in?

Oh, I think that if we still haven't left Europe, Trump / Kim Jung Un haven't blown up the planet, Megan hasn't appeared in different shoes, then yes, it's a "slow" week, really. But Nicolas Parsons missed Just a Minute!

Somewhere I read the really funny remark that out there in the depths of the ocean, a sub captain is trying to work out what the meaning of NP not being on the programme means. Attack? Or don’t bother to surface, we have all gone?

I was reading a book with nine year olds today. In the story a child found a CD rom.
Kid 1 - "What's a CD rom?"
Kid 2 - "It's what they used in the olden days instead of memory sticks."

Linking to my comments about Glynn Edwards, this reminds me that Glynn's second wife, Christine Pilgrim, used to do stand up comedy and I used to accompany her in the songs that were part of her act. In her patter she would sometimes say: "Two children are playing and one says to the other: 'I found a condom on the verandah' and the other one says: 'What's a verandah?'

Reminds me of a bit from a cartoon recently, where two girls pull out cheque books and another asks what they are: "We don't really know. They're like ... Daddy's ... paper ... credit cards ... or something."

Spend much of the day musing that after centuries of both social and technological advance, humankind has probably reached a new and rather wonderful peak. Come December, many shall mark one of the most important dates in a key religion's calendar by presenting their children with the sum total of scientific development to date: a model unicorn that s*hits glitter: inews.co.uk/news/consumer/best-toys-2018-christmas-fingerlings-lol-surprise-unicorn-poopsie-argos-list/I am so split between loving and hating this one. It’s a shame toys r us is no longer trading. Imagine the queue’s of parents buying that present for their kids! Oh the embarrassment when parents ask their kids want they want for Xmas - no phones or games console this year, but a plastic unicorn that “produces” glitter!

^ At least he’s not called Gary, the Fantasy Unicorn... that’d really be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

Not yet available to buy on Amazon. I’ve just checked! I think I would do an Amazon locker collection point. Imagine doing a click and collect and being handed this toy!
