Gotta say, I'm liking the new marketing and artwork for the Broadway production... ...even if it does remind me of another Harold Ramis / Andie MacDowell 90's comedy...

Looking forward to hearing reports from people who see this tonight and over the coming weeks. Will be interesting to see what they have changed from the London run and how the audience on Broadway takes to it

Oh dear there appears to be a technical issue with the revolves. The delay has gone on for so long that they have offered everyone in the audience a free drink

OMG! Didn't the same thing happen in London? Not quite. They didn't explain exactly what it was but the decided to turn the first preview into an open dress rehearsal instead. Something can't have been quite right for them to do this though it ran smoothly with no major problems. Regarding what happened last night the general consensus online appears to be that they smashed it despite the change to a concert style show. It looks like they handled it really well at the theatre with offers for free drinks and and invite to come back for free when they wish.

We were told on the night that they simply hadn't managed to run the show all the way through without stopping (and weren't sure if they'd been able to that night either). From what I've seen on Twitter the audience last night were positive and understanding.

I do remember at the Old Vic early preview the cast put signposts into holes in the revolve, but as it revolved the signposts fell over .... Andy Karl trying to keep a straight face, sing and step over falling signs was a giggle. They changed it when I saw it again to the cast holding the signposts up ...

I wonder how a UK audience would have reacted to this.

I wonder how a UK audience would have reacted to this. We'd have probably tutted a bit, checked our watches every 2 minutes and queued in an orderly fashion at the bar.

LOL That's what I mean! I just think it's interesting how the reception of an incident like this would have been so different. The crowd on Broadway almost seemed excited at the novelty of the unusualness of the situation, and thought of it as Broadway "history".

Anyway, you're right -- I would've loved to have been there because I like to see how creative teams respond to these kinds of things. I've never actually seen a hold on a professional show, but I did see Spider-Man twice and things happened then. The crowd here was definitely excited to have seen something like this. As much as I applaud their determination to give the audience a show, I think we can all agree that the only way to have truly compensated the ticket holders was to have received a lap dance and an inappropriate grope from Andy Karl. I'd have demanded nothing less.

So the track list for the album has been released (and is now available to pre-order)...
1 Overture 2 There Will be Sun 3 Day One 4 Day Two 5 Day Three 6 Stuck 7 Nobody Cares 8 Philandering 9 One Day 10 Entr'acte 11 Playing Nancy 12 Hope 13 Everything About You 14 If I Had My Time Again 15 Everything About You (Reprise) 16 Philosopher 17 Night Will Come 18 Philanthropy 19 Seeing You
Just trying to work out what Philandering, Philosopher and Philanthropy are (clever names though!). From my memory of the London production... I'm guessing Philandering is the segment around him getting Nancy to sleep with him, Philosopher is him learning the piano/helping the homeless man and Philanthropy is the tap number/dinner-dance? Am I right here?
So excited for this album, but can't decide to pre-order on iTunes or wait (and pay a bit more for postage etc) for a physical CD!

Oh excellent! I was slightly afraid that the Broadway side of things might try putting their foot down over Playing Nancy, I would have very much missed it if they had.

One complaint I have seen a lot from people who have seen it on Broadway is that they don't think Playing Nancy works and that it should be cut. It was always a divisive song but it would be a shame to lose it

I really hope they don't cut it. It's so audacious to open the second act with a song that challenges the audience to think about the story being told beyond its obvious plot.

Playing Nancy was the one song I couldn't warm to in the show. It's a nice song but for me it just didn't work.

I read a review of the musical (London run) recently that said they thought the townsfolk were fleshed out unnecessarily. It was enough in the film for (say) Ned to be annoying without having to give him a dead wife. But that's what I really loved about the musical. The only character who can possibly have any linear character development is Phil, but by giving songs to other characters and by slowly revealing things about them, we sort of got the feeling of having seen character growth even where we know there isn't any. As Phil comes to know Punxsutawney and its residents, so do we. Much more satisfying than the movie for me. I can see where people who don't like Playing Nancy as a part of the show are coming from, but for me it's one of the things that really elevates the musical from "pretty good" to "hey they've actually THOUGHT about this". Also if they *hadn't* shared out the work the way they did, Andy Karl might not have survived the run, and that would have been a DAMN shame.
