I saw it last nigt (what a rarity-I never get to the cinema these days sadly) and I think I must have been too hyped by the Globes.
It was sweet and charming and beautifully shot, but it didnt punch me in the gut as much I expected.. Im a real cryer ( I shed a tear at the Jackie preview that played before the film lol) and I'm a sucker for "dreamer" type stories, but the resolution didnt feel desrved in the end somehow... Still a very sweet film- and very exciting to see an original musical on film.

I wonder how long before this delicate charming colourful chamber piece of a musical heads to the stage. Nice summation. My worry is that take away the chemistry of the performers and the direction and what have you got? The strenghts are not in the plot or the songs (or the singing and dancing for that matter). I was happy to suspend my critical faculties and just enjoy. I am a little worried that on the small screen it may not impress as I still hope it will charm me for years to come. Funny because in 'real life' I am extremely sensitive to spotting which charmers have no talent to back it up. It's a musical.

I've always been slightly confused by this movie, is it a full musical or just a movie with a few songs ? The trailers don't make it out to be a musical but it's always classed as that in articles. I plan to see it at the weekend regardless! It has about as many songs as a Disney musical has - around 6 or 7. This wont work on stage. The best things about it are the cinematic elements.

So can the leads sing? Strange that there has been no discussion of this given all the debate re Emma Watson

So can the leads sing? Strange that there has been no discussion of this given all the debate re Emma Watson The songs are pretty low key and not in Broadway style. The vocals were unedited as far as I can tell. I thought they did fine. Ryan's voice really suited 'City of Stars', the main theme. Emma's 'Audition' was sung and filmed live and she did a good job with that too. The songs in Beauty and the Beast are more demanding and require stronger vocals.

Emma Stone has already performed in Cabaret on Broadway, why would we be in the slightest bit worried/curious compared with Emma Watson who hasn't sung anything for an audience since a rousing burst of "Hogwarts Hogwarts Hoggy-warty-Hogwarts" in one of the earlier Harry Potter films?

So can the leads sing? Strange that there has been no discussion of this given all the debate re Emma Watson About as well as Nicole Kidman or Ewan McGregor or..... ie you wouldn't want to go to a concert they gave but they get by. I think its acknowledged that since Marlon Brando was cast as Nathan Detroit, in Hollywoodland it's more important we like the singer than love the voice.

So can the leads sing? Strange that there has been no discussion of this given all the debate re Emma Watson They're not Broadway belters that's for sure but they can definitely hold a tune. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are two of the most charismatic movie actors around for my money. Emma Stone in particular has that Julia Roberts star quality about her.

I have a bit of a controversial opinion about this film actually which is that whilst I thought Emma Stone did a good job, Ryan Gosling managed to impress me more with a lot less to work with.

So I caught a preview of this on Tuesday night. I really like it.
Great chemistry between the two leads. Strong colours.
Some subtle and clever choreography and great sining from the leads.
Parts make you happy whilst other parts make you sad.
It certainly makes you leave on a high.
Is Ryan Gosling really playing the piano? Cause if he ain't, it's certainly well edited to make it look like he is.
Some lovely images as well.
Emma Stone has been cast in the upcoming Cruella film and overtime there was close up of her face I ken trying to see this well defined cheekbones of that tall thin woman wanting dalmation pelts.

Figured I'd start a thread to see what people think of La La Land, I know it's only been released today but I've seen it twice now and simply adore it! I love all the throwbacks and nods to old cinema. The score to die for, it's replaced Moana as my go to driving music. Definitely being added to my favourite films list.

Hhhhhmmmmmm Obviously this was enjoyable but think it's a little cheeky calling it a musical what with only 1 song in the last 70mins and actually only about 3/4 actual separate songs........a tad dissapointed

Got back from seeing this tonight and it was a great new movie musical. I really enjoyed it and think Emma an Ryan were both wonderful , their voices were very nic. The music was really good as well, this has an amazing score which is not suprising. The dancing in it was all great and the music and dance felt very natural. The style of it all was beautiful, it was very picturesque. For me it also really did feel like a love letter to classic musicals and I noticed a few Easter eggs like toward the end Emma is holding multi coloured balloons in an Audrey Hepburn style which was an homage to funny face a think and a few other to Fred and ginger. Would like to know other things you saw. Me and my mum really enjoys doing it and would happily see it again . Let's hope it wins lots of oscars.

Having been to LA recently, it was really great to see it in La La Land especially the Griffith Observatory and the Warner Bros lot.

I was musing about the great celluloid couples
Tracy and Hepburn Astaire and Rogers Powell and Moy Bogart and Bacall who else?
The energy comes from the female and the male is more reserved. This pair have a while to go before they join that list, but the dynamic is the same?
In this way it’s very old fashioned because I believe in the couples above the male is somehow more …serious?…profound?…wiser? Whatever, they get their way in the end.
IN La La Land he follows his dream and she goes off to be a working mother.
(Please tell me if you think I’m reading too much into this.)

Someone on Twitter mentioned that it feels like this film is embarrassed that it's a musical and I have to say I agree. There was no real reason for most of the vocals to be so wispy and indistinct. Also between this and Whiplash, I now have a very real fear of being trapped in a lift with the director, he strikes me as being an even bigger jazz bore than Ryan Gosling's already pretty dull character.

Started with great premise, visually exciting, great music, fabulous costumes.
It lost it along the way, from being utterly wrapped up in it my attention drifted as the relationship changed. I wanted more whimsy.

I felt bad that while I loved the style and costumes it just bored me. Just disappointing as I expected to like it.

Well, this wasn't perfect. I agree about the singing. It was indeed very 'wispy' and I longed for a bit more 'oomph'. None of the singing really wowed me. Saying that, it didn't really take me out of the world of the film like "Les Mis" did. The songs weren't great though. Some were very 'samey' and blended in to one another. Perhaps that was the point? I can't make up my mind whether the opening number was a waste of time, or integral in setting up the world of the film.
However, I loved it! It looked stunning, and there were some absolutely beautiful moments/sequences in it. The way it set up Mia and Seb's initial story was really clever. I also loved the moment in the observatory and the end sequence. I had chills!
Emma Stone was the star. She was magnetic, and I couldn't take my eyes off of her.
Go, and decide for yourself.

It's a clever title as La La Land obviously refers to a gentle fantasy world, and LA, but to all the 'wispy' style of singing.....at some points it really does seem as if they are just gently muttering la-la-la half heartedly. Not always a bad thing.

I really liked this - wouldn't say loved as I too thought the singing lacked power (it didn't need to always have it, but at some points like the opening sequence it would have helped). Pleasantly surprised by how good Gosling and Stone were at the dancing, and I generally liked the story and how it flowed.
This really is Emma Stone's movie though, she's electrifying.
