As these celebs use Strictly as a platform for their talents, I am surprised that last years winner Joe McFadden has not got a lead in a musical out of it (I remember seeing him in She Loves Me at Chichester - so well qualified). Miss Burke (whatever anyone may think of her) has got a part in a high profile production of Chess and a lead in Chicago in the WE and later to lead a tour of the BodyGuard again, all within 12 months! I suspect she would have been in the frame for at least 2 of those without Strictly. Probably all three. McFadden played it wrong. He should sack his agent - who has clearly not helped him cash in on his success.

This You Tubing is a bit of a mystery to me, but hats off to the casting department of Strictly for getting someone that the kids know and potentially broadening the audience for the show! If all 8 million of his subscribers watch - that's the viewing figures for this series sorted!!!

If all 8 million of his subscribers watch - that's the viewing figures for this series sorted!!! Sadly for the BBC (and Mr Sugg), a lot of his viewers are not UK-based and thus can't vote - but it is still a smart move on the part of the producers to at least try to engage a different demographic. Sugg (unlike his sister and her other half, Alfie) has managed, so far, to avoid major controversy. Zoe came undone last Christmas for her £50 advent calendar. Alfie recently got a lot of backlash for showing how he could live on £1 a day. Both have somewhat reduced their output since then and have certainly lost followers. Joe Sugg doesn't seem to have caused major upset so far and has recently set up a new agency to help newer YouTubers achieve their goals. He does, at this stage, appear to be one of the good guys. (yes, I watch far too much YouTube!)

Problem is, because he calls himself Thatcher Joe, he looses as many votes as he gains! That is because he used to be a thatcher to earn a living. Last year, he demonstrated thatching techniques to Prince Charles... So did he used to work at the Belgravia Hair Clinic for Follically Challenged Men...?

Not sure about YouTubers I wonder what the likes of Craig will think about that. I wonder if he'll be described as "Social Media Personality" when he is introduced.

I would hope the subsequent announcements may at least be 'stars' that more of the population have heard of. Announcing these 4 first with the exception of Faye Tozer strikes me of a desperation to fill places as was rumoured in the press.

The very few “vloggers” whose output I’ve seen have all developed the skill of very fast editing so barely a sentence is uttered without there being an edit in it. CHF is a master at it. It suggests that they’re incapable of doing a piece to camera at normal speed without fluffing, or sounding boring. Not exactly the stuff that celebrities are usually made of.

To be fair, more people watch Joe Suggs' YouTube channel thingy than watch last years winner Joe McFadden's 'Holby City' or bought last years runner-up Alexandra Burke's last album. I think he's possibly better known to "the youth" and is there to bring in a new audience. To them he's probably a much bigger star than Katie Piper, Faye Tozer and Danny John-Jules (who to be fair I couldn't have picked out of a line-up either).

Don’t you worry longinthetooth we’re entitled to not know, and not to have to google it. But don’t forget next time, it’s upper case and an eye roll like this ”WHO?? 🙄”.

I had to google this one, DJ on Capital FM it seems....so probably a mystery to those outside London/who don't listen to commercial radio (which you'd think the BBC would hope it was most of it's viewers no?)
Anyway she's young she's cute, maybe she really wants to be in musicals instead?

I hadn't really heard of Capital FM - so even after googling her, I was none the wiser.
She must have a very effective agent/PR team to land this gig.

Second day in a row that my reaction has been "who?"
I guess they need someone for the obligatory "professional dancer gets up at 4am to see their celebrity partner do their radio show and is exhausted by the end of the day and doesn't know how their partner is managing to balance both job and Strictly" VT.
Hopefully she'll have some natural musicality though. Bet she get partnered with AJ so they can try to conjure up a showmance again.

Vick Hope's name was mentioned in the mix last week but I must admit I hadn't heard of her. A slightly strange choice given she works for a commercial radio station, if the BBC wanted someone from her demographic why not go to Radio 1 or One Xtra etc.
Nothing against the girl, she is an attractive young lady and might be a good dancer but I've never really heard of her.
We talk about gender, age and race stereotyping but each year Strictly will always look for a similar diverse range of contestants.
We have yet to have this year's gay contestants revealed, the comedy ones, the fuller figures, the eye candy both male and female and maybe the classier older lady who can actually dance.
We have the backstory/inspiration - Katie Piper Pop star, slightly older woman, gay following - Faye Older guy, black, who will likely be entertaining and can likely dance - Danny Younger Social Media Guy - Joe Mixed race woman, heightening her profile and bringing some glamour - Vick

Apparently the next contestant is going to be revealed on Angela Scanlon’s Radio 2 Show tonight, and the seventh will be revealed on This Morning tomorrow.

Angela was rumoured before to be an option for Strictly but as she has a 6 month old daughter would she want the hours training and Katie Piper is this year's new mum. That the announcement is happening on a drivetime radio show and not One Show probably doesn't hold out much hope for quality of contestant.
A lot of the This Morning mob have done Strictly - Ruth, Alison, Lisa Snowdon etc. If it is one of them I just hope it's Rylan as he'd be hilarious or Gino but both them have other programmes so would they have time to commit. It will probably be Alice Beer or someone like that.
I don't see Eamonn doing it given his workschedule and the fact he's had both hips done however entertaining he'd be.
Always a pity the late Dale Winton never got the chance to do Strictly, the thought of him doing it and camping it up makes me laugh just thinking about it.

Katie Piper is this year's new mum. They have a quota, or just really, really few crèche facilities? Just with any of these shows, they do seem to cast to fill certain criteria. They feel that they need to connect with as many demographic groups as they can. I can sort of see their point - but it can lead to them picking people who really wouldn't be well-known enough to qualify as a celebrity but who can tick the right sort of boxes in terms of identity/tribe/group. Classic one for me was Judy Murray. Her claim to fame was being mother of tennis players more than her career as a minor tennis coach. She was picked because of her sons - and that is hardly a good enough reason in my eyes. Unless they are going to impress with some really big names, Strictly might be in for a bad year. No-one so far is close to even being a B-list celeb.

Really depends on your frame of reference though doesn't it? which much of the discussion above has tried (and fallen on deaf ears!) to highlight. For some people some 'Celebrities' are the Tom Cruise of their world- in the same way an obscure Musical theatre actor is a big deal to some of us and a 'who?' to the rest of the world. I don't know also that Strictly is or has ever been a show that has relied on or claimed to have BIG stars- it's always been a mix of tv presenters from various eras and styles and soap stars. And part of the joy (for me anyway) is finding you love 'that fella I'd never heard of' because he does a nice Waltz

As was mentioned earlier, Celebrity Masterchef is far worse than Strictly for their broad definition of celebrity (and the same does go for that awful jungle thing)
But it shouldn't be beyond the BBC to attract people with a reasonable national profile. If too many people have to google to find out about a contestant on Strictly, they have done something wrong.
And today's announcement is definitely in that category. Someone from London commercial radio show is not a big enough name for Strictly. She may be a great dancer and will use this as a springboard to something else. But at the moment, she isn't a big enough name.

Last year's show was hardly full of A-listers (or even B-listers for the most part). When dear old Debbie McGee is as A-list as it gets, you know you've got to rely on entertainment and not the names.

Surely everyone was saying that about Joe McFadden, Alexandra Burke and Gemma Atkinson last year too?

No
Joe was, at that time, appearing as a major character in a BBC ongoing drama - so he had a profile (as well as a theatre background) Alexandra found fame through X Factor and has her (well-discussed) theatre career Gemma was known for appearing on Hollyoaks and Emmerdale as well as appearing on various tv 'reality' shows
Whereas Vick Hope co-presents a London breakfast radio show
