Company is my favourite show of his despite the issues I have with the ending which I've discussed before. Assassins is by far my favourite score of his though.

Love him. Love everything about him. Wanna be him for Christmas! Lol!
Mr Sondheim, we're not worthy!
Best show (every time, hands down) Sunday in the Park with George, with Sweeney Todd/A Little Night Music tied for a close second then Into the Woods.
In terms of dialogue- Let all the birds nest in your hair- A Little Night Music
Songs- The Princes song Agony is very clever, as is Agony, both from into the Woods.
The Worst Pies in London and A Little Priest ,both from Sweeney Todd are both excellent, clever and witty. I also like A Weekend in the Country and It Would Have Been Wonderful again from A Little Night Music and Unworthy of Your Love from Assassins.
I once went to a Sondheim talk where the character of Petra and her song from A Little Night Music and why it is placed in the show where it is were discussed in detail. After that, her song The Millers Son makes so much sense.

Impossible to choose just one favourite.
Favourite rhyme/line is either "I like the isle of Manhattan, smoke on your pipe and put that in" or "While her withers wither with her"

oh Sally, you have beaten me to it with the 'withers' line. Mind you the line about painting without the right, bright, white, light is pretty darn clever.
Gilbert and /Sullivan were also pretty hot on such rhymes - 'to fit the wit of a bit of a chit, and that's the long and the short of it!'
Can we add the missing 'H' to the title of this forum.
Not a rhyme, but it always makes me laugh when Joanna, in Sweeney, is wittering on about her reticule and Anthony sings 'what's a reticule?'
I wonder how Sondheim is translated into other languages...I have a rip roaring Brazilian ( I think) Little Night music.

Sunday in the Park with George is easily my favourite Sondheim, although there is very little I don't like. Not rhyming but 'the choice may have been mistaken the choosing was not, from 'Move on' strikes a real resonance with me and 'We lose things. And then we choose things. And there are Louis's And there are Georges- Well, Louis's And George'. Kills me every single time!

Sondheim is my favourite composer of all time so hard to pick out a favourite but probably between Company Sunday and Follies.
Favourite line is from The Frogs."Please don't fart, there's very little air and this is art"

I like all of them.
I like the fact that whichever show you go to, you're guaranteed the same song just with different words. It's very comforting.

The sound of the whistle in Sweeney always gives me shivers of excitement. And the finale of SITPWG is my happy place.

My favourite: When a person's personality is personable... It's harder than a matador coercing a bull...
And not QUITE his, but whenever I visit my parents I sing: I like the town of Prestatyn / Smoke on your pipe and put that in!

From Pacific Overtures;
Have some tea my Lord some chrysanthemum tea It's a tangled situation as your father would agree And it mightn't been so tangled if you hadn't had him strangled
Lovely!

One is fun, why not two? And if you like two, you might as well have four And if you like four, why not a few Why not a slew More! More!
From the song More by Sondheim from the movie Dick Tracy

My favourite song by anybody, ever, is "With So Little To Be Sure Of" from Anyone Can Whistle - perhaps the most heartfelt lyrics Sondheim ever wrote. I can't hear it without dissolving into mush.

Hard to choose a favourite but I think as I was converted to Sondheim back in the early 70s with Company, both the OBC and then then near OBC cast at Her Majesty's, it will always have a special place for me. As far as favourite song, I love "With So Little To Be Sure Of" from Anyone Can Whistle, "Not While I'm Around" from Sweeney Todd and "No One Is Alone" from Into The Woods. My favourite lyric is probably "With riotous laughter we quietly suffer the season in town which is reason enough for a weekend in the country." Of course this could all change next week - nothing is ever set in stone (Benjamin or otherwise).

Yep, very passionate about Sondheim, but I admit that 'Liaisons' is my least favourite song. Clever lyrics certainly, but it is a dirge, and I'm always amazed that the signers don't get totally lost in it.

Clever lyrics certainly, but it is a dirge, and I'm always amazed that the signers don't get totally lost in it. I used to feel that way too but over time I got to understand the lyrics and this is a great song. From this song, you understand Mde. Armfeldt's previous life of luxury, how Desiree is of Royal heritage and thus her disgust for the her lifestyle choice (an actor) and thus the tension between the two. It also fits in with the little one line quips she makes to Fredrika.

I feel like it's almost committing musical theatre sacrilege to say it, but I don't particularly like Sondheim. I much prefer him as a lyricist (I love West Side Story and Gypsy) than composer, and will generally only see a Sondheim show if something about the production itself intrigues me. I did like the Menier production of Assassins, but I am one of the few people who despised the Ball/Staunton Sweeney Todd a few years ago! Staunton was the only good thing about that show as far as I'm concerned.

Sondheim's genius is hard to describe. Some days I cannot stand ANY of his music, and his shows all seem ridiculously pretentious; other days I am kneeling at my Sondheim throne for hours. This is why I consider him a genius, because he taps into that elusive cerebral/emotional space that few composers have so prolifically, and confidently explored. I always understand when people say they can't stand Sondheim... subjectivity and all. In comparison, Webber's music always satisfies and moves me, and he rightly deserves his commercial success, however Sondheim keeps me on my toes and has me engaged instead of standing merely in awe at the sidelines...
1. Company 2. Merrily We Roll Along 3. Sweeney Todd 4. Into The Woods
