Well it's lovely to be back in a theatre but still bloomin annoying that people are still totally incapable of working out seat allocations. Ah well...

Last night at my local (The Glory in Hackney). The wonderful Crayola asked one guy to be quiet. He was taking very loudly she asked him to be considerate and he then stopped taking. All very polite with no bitchy response. Hurrah to a show stop. I wish more performers would do this, although it may bit different if the cast of Le Miz all of a sudden broke the 4th wall....

It's back. Week one and we're going in.
One empty seat wasn't enough isolation for me from the man two seats along, last night at Les Miserables. He hummed along sporadically which wasn't so bad but towards the end he started doing the dreaded singing along. He even said "Jean Valjean" in weird accent at one point. Luckily it was only the last 15 minutes or so that it got annoying, I've experienced worse but still it gets to a point point where you want to turn around and go "shut up!"

Watching ABBA MANIA at the moment at the Shaftesbury Theatre and the number of people who are have got their phones out and recording / taking photos is just unreal (and the cast are encouraging recording /photos). Why can’t people just enjoy the on stage performances and not view it through their phones? 😡

ABBA Mania goes for more of a concert/party vibe though doesn't it? I think the same thing when I see people film curtain calls. When are you going to watch that? Are you ever going to watch that? Are you ever going to be sat at home of a Sunday evening and think "Oh! I know! I'll watch the curtain call of Les Mis!"?

If the cast want you to take photos /recordings and post them on SM then as you say you can’t really do much about it, but I’m just glad I was front row and not behind these people. It would have been more annoying to have had a row of phone screens in front of me for the 2 hours.

I think productions also quite like the filming of curtain calls/encores cos it's free publicity. Not necessarily filming during the show but I am convinced one of the main reasons Six is so huge (not just in the UK but internationally) with lots of young kids is because of people posting megasixes online. Not that the success is undeserved, it's a brilliant show IMO and knows exactly where it fits in, but it has helped accelerate the success quite a lot.

Are you ever going to be sat at home of a Sunday evening and think "Oh! I know! I'll watch the curtain call of Les Mis!"? I started taking curtain call photos at the end of a number of Royal Ballet performances I saw in my last pre-covid theatregoing year after seeing other people's curtain call photos on Instagram. The ROH allows curtain call photos. A few days ago, after the Royal Ballet announced promotions for a number of those dancers, I went back through my curtain call photos, looking at photos of those that had just been promoted. It was a really nice reminder of some of the performances I saw in 2019-20. So I don't see why people wouldn't re-watch curtain call videos.

Sat in Row E in the Dress Circle at the Mousetrap - first trip back to the theatre - and the people in the box behind me were horribly behaved. In and out of the door and talking loudly to each other. Such fun!

Very pleasant trip to Clapham Grand yesterday for. Socially distanced and apparently part of the pilot scheme. Only marred by the squawking harpy they sat us in front of, who talked continuously through both halves and but, more annoyingly, literally shouted and squealed at her 2 maskless friends who spent the duration of the interval looming over us instead of going elsewhere to shout at each other. Despite her, still great to be at a thing again, I quite like socially distanced seating

.... I quite like socially distanced seating Me too - my trips to the Vaudeville and Duchess have been great. They have physically moved the seat rows, so plenty of legroom, so much so that you don't even need to stand up to let someone get past, plus there is an empty seat either side, so room for coats and bags. No queues at the bar, just a bit of a queue to the toilet. I know it's not viable in the long term, but I am enjoying the extra space for now. It feels like going to business class seats when you're used to economy! Back to bad behaviour now though. I don't know if 15 months of social distancing have made people healthier and not prone to the normal colds etc, but I don't think I have heard one single cough in the auditorium since theatre has returned.

I went to the Palace and Palladium in December and they have removed whole rows in the stalls so the legroom was fantastic. I'd be happy to pay an extra tenner if they could keep it that way then I don't have to get an aisle seat which is usually right at the end of the row.

The Grand have removed everything not in use so no empty seats, just space. Front stalls are all pairs, rear stalls, slips for larger groups. App and table service for drinks/nuts etc.

I like the sound of ‘no coughs’ and leg room...Do we think that these improvements ( ahem) will continue into the future or will they put all the seats back etc as soon as covid becomes just another jabbable virus whenever this will be but say, by next summer?

I doubt they'll continue. Removing rows of seats is losing thousands in potential weekly revenue. The leg room and overall feeling of being less crowded is nice though. I'm a big fan of a central aisle in the stalls for example, but many theatres have got rid of them and now they're "premium seats".

Maybe the concept of "premium" seats will change and it won't be about the sightlines, but they will charge more for extra legroom and more space around you, like they do on aircraft. I know a few tall people that would happily pay a bit more for extra comfort.

Ah but, the unforseen consequences rule might lead to shows and plays that are designed for smaller audiences or spaced out audiences. All sorts of different techniques and writing may come into being as it did when they went from open to proscenium arch. Slow progression perhaps but interesting to consider.

Oh I quite like having rows more spaced out etc! Much easier to move around in. I just think the attitude of many producers and theatre owners is to pack people in like sardines and charge £200 a ticket nowadays. As soon as they're allowed to go back to it, they will.

www.datalounge.com/thread/28719367-john-benjamin-hickey-recounts-how-madonna-pissed-off-natasha-richardson-by-braiding-her-hair-throughout-the-cabaret-show#John Benjamin Hickey recounts how Madonna pissed off Natasha Richardson by braiding her hair throughout the Cabaret show Video at the link. Here's the article Madonna once braided her hair while watching a performance of "Cabaret" -- and the late Natasha Richardson wasn't too thrilled about it, according to costar John Benjamin Hickey. Comment: It’s a very British luvvie thing to be appalled by the ungrateful audience. Meanwhile I was at the National Theatre sitting behind Alan Rickman and Fiona Shaw talking and giggling together like they were in their living rooms. Once he realised at the interval he was pissing us off, he shot us an apologetic look and piped down, but she didn’t.

Not just The British luvvies! Jonathan Groff slated her for playing on her phone throughout Hamilton. edit: from www.vulture.com/2015/07/jonathan-groff-calls-out-madonna-for-texting.htmlIn an interview with Groff, Dot429 asks if he was disappointed that Madge got banned. “No. Because that bitch was on her phone. You couldn’t miss it from the stage. It was a black void of the audience in front of us and her face there perfectly lit by the light of her iPhone through three-quarters of the show.”

From my recent front row visit to everybody’s talking about Jamie still enjoyed the show despite the drunk singing along on the front row ) To add to that his even drunker friend who when arriving placed her wine on the stage ( the FOH staff are some of the best and swiftly took it down ) then told me she’s seen Jamie 3 times and loves it so much then texted all the way through act one ( staff told her to turn it off ) and her friend to wear his mask 😷 numerous times he did not follow requests ! Thankfully no texting in second half. Only because battery had run out and she plugged it in the theatre socket !! She turned her back on me in second half as after 45 mins I politely indicated to her to close her phone . This was 20 mins after staff had told her already . Then wait for it !!! The finale .... her friend needs the loo clambers over everyone .... she gets up puts her full wine glass on the stage and handbag 👝!!! 😱 Shane ritchies face was a picture then Sandra b noticed it and corpsed in shock ... then James gillan or maybe Noah. But think it was James shouted at top of his voice get that off the stage ! Lots of giggles from the cast and just shock of it all .... wish someone has filmed it as I know some fans do record the last song 🎶 Omg 😳 what a night happy birthday me lol .... can’t wait to go back hopefully minus the rude drunks

Not my natural stamping ground but was at ROH tonight for Chrissie Hynde and the most notoriously judgey crowd tutted absolutely everything except their own collective removal of masks as soon as they were sat in their socially distanced seats. Grrr.

At Carousel at the Open Air last night, I had to tell a young guy who was maybe late teens/early 20's to stop using his phone in the first 10/15 mins of the show. Obviously with it being outside and still light, it wasn't the glare from the phone that annoyed me, just having his incessant thumbs darting around in my eyeline while he texted all and sundry.
When I told him it was annoying me, he gave me SUCH. A. LOOK. The same he'd probably have given a parent who'd told him to put his phone away at the dinner table. He looked mightily peeved to have to stop doing it.

I went to Anything Goes the other night and on one song, apparently, someone behind me had been singing along softly but got caught out when the song ended and she carried on singing. At least she wasn't loud enough that I heard her during the song!
