That's why I said "casually." If you're just walking out like you normally would, sans speech, casually talking to your friends about how great the show was, or stopping in the lobby to discuss dinner, then I'm going to judge you. You could've waited. If you're rushing out, OK, some leniency is gonna happen!

The unmistakable sound of two seats flipping up and the sight of those two ladies* with their hand bags and warm coats over their arms doing the mid-row side shuffle as the clock hits 10.... it’s a theatrical tradition! With a bit of luck it will be in a dead quiet bit and you’ll get the sound of the exit door closing heavily too. Marvellous!
*It’s usually two ladies.

No fewer than six women visiting the Ladies during the first act of Waitress last night.
The Adelphi is one of those theatres with the door to the toilets directly in the auditorium - I wonder if that increases the number of people who go during the show? Both the 'suggestibility' of seeing the toilets sign, as well as the impression that it'll be nice and quick and you won't miss much.

I dislike when toilets are within the auditorium. At one case, the Sunderland Empire. One group decided to leave the door open whilst using the really loud hand dryer, which could be heard from the auditorium, and definitely onstage.

Liverpool's excellent, even brilliant, rendition of Les Mis was however punctuated ,by the two females in the row behind who kept on talking , with such gems, as this is really emotional, and comments on the story, and lord knows what else. Then there was the noisy departure to the ladies , after only 30 minutes. An interesting time was had on our row in the interval thinking of cures for this beyond the ones already tried - sellotape, baseball bats, and a gun were favoured.
And then there was the 14-15 year old teen who having been taken by her poor parents to watch an expensive musical, with a centre front stalls seat , and a world class cast , decided she had an urgent need to look at her phone every 15 minutes. And love island wasn't even on TV. We seem to have created a real problem here- with the continual need to receive the latest social trivia , and the attention span of the newt.

I saw "Oklahoma" in New York last week, and the pre-show announcement said "If you are using your phone, the cast will stop the show and ask you to turn it off". And they repeated a reminder to turn phones back off after the interval. Seemed to work!

I've often wondered if having a row marked P in most theatres has the same effect. Thankfully most theatres aren't big enough to have a seat 69.

I was at a smallish concert at Hare and Hounds pub in Kings Heath Birmingham last night. It hosts concerts for lots of up and coming or niche artists across the whole music spectrum. The artist I was watching was a young R&B/Soul singer called Kara Marni. It was her first ever headline show and it meant a lot to her. The audience was diverse and mixed.
However one idiot who was about 6ft 3ins tall, pushed his way to the front and filmed the show on his phone learning over people including being virtually on top of a mum who had bought her young daughter along. He wasn't doing anything but he was stood to close to the woman. He called Kara babes several time which I thought was disrespectful.
Two feisty smaller girls who were stood behind him and couldn't see asked him to move but he wouldn't. One put the lemon from her drink on his shoulder. Of course this guy who thought he was the gift to women threw it right back in the girl's face. At the end the girl got the lemon and squeezed it on the guy's head after words were exchanged.
Then a fight nearly broke out, the guy's mates who had behaved perfectly had to drag him out. The main girl's friend and myself were trying to hold her back then the guy shouted something else which I didn't catch and the girl's friend tried to storm after him but Kara's guitarist pulled her back.
Luckily Kara had left the stage before all this happened and hadn't realised the guy had been annoying so many people when she came out to the merch stand and spoke to us afterwards.
The guy had been irritating but hadn't directly affected me so I didn't say anything but he had really annoyed the two girls who perhaps over reacted.
I didn't hear about any further clashes outside, the two girls remained in the concert room for a while as they wanted to meet Kara and we advised them to stay put to allow the guy to leave and someone checked he'd gone before the girls left.

Three ladies whose seats were at the end of a row decided to enter said row at the wrong end, climbing across everyone rather than going round the back of the stalls. When the show finished, and we had all put on our coats ready to leave, they were still sitting tight (perhaps they thought there was an Act 3), then looked up and the nearest one said in amazement, "oh - you want to come out this way?"
Another one - when the FOH lady held up the sign for No Photographs, someone promptly took a pic of the stage - incorporating FOH lady and sign!
Incidentally, when the last people take their seats (not the ones mentioned above) in the middle of a row, why is it they look at you as if it's your fault that they have trodden on your feet because you have the cheek to have these appendages attached to your legs?

Horrible evening at Motown the musical at Sunderland Empire tonight.
I've never seen the show before and was looking forward to it. Unfortunately it was completely spoilt by some of the worst audience members I have ever had the misfortune to sit in a room with.
First act I could not even concentrate on what was happening on stage and struggled to hear the dialogue as a group of, I suspect, drunk women about five rows back from me were talking constantly. This wasn't whispering. This was very loud talking. Talk talk talk Then a big shush. More talking. A more angry shush etc etc. This went on for about half an hour. Getting louder and louder. People were saying "shut up" but this selfish lot carried on. Why they were not removed I don't know but they spoilt the majority the first act for a huge amount of people. There was then some altercation with those around them who were really fed up by now and they stormed out. People cheered.
Second act another group (perhaps boosted by some interval bevvies) started. Chat chat chat and when the performers were singing they carried on chatting but louder. Almost shouting. Why they were there I do not know as they had no intention of listening to the music. They were in aisle seats so should have been noticed and slung out but, no, they remained to destroy the show for us all.
Two rows in front of them was the parents of the child in the show. I felt for them as when they were trying to enjoy his performance these idiots were carrying on.
Also, I have never seen so many people with weak bladders in a theatre. Around fifty people in the stalls must have got up during the first act and I wish I was exaggerating.
The sad thing is that this is a good show but was completely ruined for many by a small minority of very selfish people and more should really have been done to stop this. There was a security guard in the theatre auditorium, first time I have seen that, but he spent most of the time hiding at the front behind a pillar so I really did not see the point!

I shuddered in recognition when I read your post, Shady, because this was very similar to what I encountered when this show was in the West End. Such selfish, self seeking, memememe people who didnt give a toss about being in the same room as other human beings so long as they could whoop and holler and dance on the seats when they wanted. Shouldnt have been allowed out, never mind allowed in.

To start page 371 of this thread
The time I sat next to a lady of the night.
I saw that the young woman sitting next to me was looking bored so I innocently asked her "aren't you enjoying the show?"
"Not really" she yawned "but he's paying me very well to try and enjoy it" and I saw that the man next to her, aged about 80, was caressing her knee.
I ignored the until the second half when I caught out of the corner of my eye that her head was bobbing up and down in between his knees. Eeuw.
That was enough for me to make a quick exit from the show.

Rant coming from me at the moment 3 unbelievably rude people sat behind me at the Wicked matinee today. Talking constantly to each other and singing along. Finally snapped and told them to be quiet when they couldn’t even keep their mouths shut during Defying Gravity. Honestly...is it too much to ask for people to have some respect for other people in the audience and the actors on stage?! I’m finding this is becoming more and more of a problem and is really starting to put me off going to the more ‘touristy’ shows where a lot of people don’t seem to grasp how they should behave whilst watching a show. Its sad to say but is it going to get to the point when the pre- show announcement about phones is going to be 5 mins long to cover everything that shouldn’t be done (that most people would consider common sense)!

It's why I go to theatre less and less. I wonder whether (a) the practice of having special 'singalong' performances of some things, and (b) the practice of 'relaxed' performances for people with dementia or people with children--whether these practices are seeping into ordinary performances and leading audiences to think that singing along and having kids running about the place and so on are always OK. Oh, and some theatre publicity, especially for juke-box musicals, encourages bad behaviour, too--How often do you see adverts saying, "They were dancing in the aisles!"?

Just seen the most unbelievable argument break out between two audience members during the interval of a musical I’m at. It seems one (an autistic lady) was asking the other to be quiet during the show and the guy didn’t like being told.
I won’t post it here due to the VERY strong language but it’s posted on my twitter @markeastaugh if anyone wants to see.

Wow. So many questions... What musical was it? What venue? Stalls? Circle? Where was the FOH staff? Did they all come back after the interval? Or did she take him outside and thrash him?
I was going to moan about how it's that time of year where there's always someone in the audience coughing, but I'll just be grateful I've never been in an audience where something like that has happened.

I like to put “🦄” at the end of a message that was intended as sarcasm. It needs to catch on in this thread... I hope not as all those little symbols are not only too small for me to see (and I AM wearing my glasses) but I don't know what any of them mean. Please let's keep this board inclusive and not something slanted towards younger people or those with better IT skills.
