The Broadway revival was pretty good overall - and I agree, the new double CD recording was very well done to capture the ALW score and new orchestrations. Ricky Martin was fine on stage. The criticisms were that Che was being directed to be more of a narrator so there wasn't the tension between him and Eva as in the original. Sadly the other problem was Elena. The early word was that her voice was shot - and I'm not quite sure if she was out for an illness as well. When I saw her, she was "OK" - but when you're playing the title role, you're expecting a lot more than simply "OK" The funniest rumor floating in NY was that the producers (since it wasn't a RUG production) tried to get Patti LuPone to take over the role. Don't know if people were joking or what - never would've happened. Too bad they didn't try to get Eden Espinosa. She did a regional production about a year ago - and the clips and reviews of her were pretty stunning

Yes I didn't quite understand the role of Che. Sometimes he seemed like a narrator, then he was being beaten up. What is his character meant to be?

Don't know if people were joking or what - never would've happened... Given that the role first appears when Eva is mid teens that would have been a bit of a stretch even for Patti In therms iff the recordings there will always be a place in my heart for the concept album with Julie C. The complete version is the new Broadway recording. I saw Elena in London and she was brilliant in it. The woman playing it on tour at the moment though is the best I've seen it played and sung - she is stunning.

Previously she was standby Elphaba in Wicked and then promoted to full time, and she generally had negative reviews, mixed at best. It's great that she's found a role she's more suited to!

Other rumours were lea Michele and Sierra boggess with Ramin Karimloo to come in together.

Well this looks interesting! A production just announced in South Africa which says 'the original West End & Broadway production' directed by Hal Prince with Emma Kingston as Eva! I wonder if they will bring this over? Big fan of Emma Kingston's voice so really hope they do.

I ended up buying the soundtrack that nobody recommended haha. However today I got the Julie Covington and Elaine Paige versions today on vinyl for £1 each so I'm pleased with that.

Yes I didn't quite understand the role of Che. Sometimes he seemed like a narrator, then he was being beaten up. What is his character meant to be? From memory there was a discussion of this in the 2006 London production's programme. Something along the lines of in the original production he is based on Che Guevara, despite no suggestion he ever met Eva Peron, to appear as the revolutionary in contrast with the government/Peron. In the 2006 production they decided instead to step away from it being Guevara and made him simply 'Che', an everyman representing the voice of the people in Argentina. The parts where he is beaten up etc I think are in relation to force being used against those who oppose Peron.

Thanks. That doesn't have as many tracks as other recordings so I'd rather get one with more. How about the one with Julie Covington? I know she doesn't have the power of Paige and Patti and her voice is a bit of an acquired taste, plus the songs on the concept album aren't necessarily my favourite arrangements either but I do actually think La Covington is my favourite Evita. On the concept album Colm Wilkinson as Che. Christopher Neil is also on the soundtrack. I think they were playing Judas and Jesus in JCS at the time.

And the use of Photoshop in that poster would lead you to expect a cast of hundreds.....they've not even tried to disguise the repeated use of the chorus.

This is one of those shows that just always seems to be on tour! Which surprises me, because much as I enjoyed it, I don't quite understand its popularity.

So if this is going into the Phoenix for a period after the current tour dates and before Manchester will it be getting a new cast?

I'm relying on members of the Evita generation to conduct themselves with a little more decorum

Based on how soon after the end of the tour previously stated that its opening I would be surprised if it wasnt the tour cast

My guess is it will be Emma, one of the understudies or someone who has playd the role previously, as it is a very fast turnaround for auditions and casting, let alone rehearsals too!

Just saying . . . I know you were being sarcastic (it takes one to know one), but when she was on Zoe Ball's show t'other week, she said words to the effect that she wouldn't be doing a My Fair Lady type of run again.

How long has the tour been running for now? It seems a bit of a short contract if they're having a cast change before the (hypothesised) West End run. I imagine they would keep most of, if not all of the cast on.
