First two hours of Wolf Hall tonight (2 episodes of 6), from 10.15 on BBC4: Mark Rylance, Damian Lewis, Claire Foy, Jonathan Pryce. Marriages and deaths ensue.
I thought The English with Emily Blunt was keenly structured, now on yer BBC iPlayer (6 x 1 hour episodes) <<< not Christmas, particularly

Claire Foy nailed that ending, that's for sure.

I'm looking forward to Detectorists and the new M R James adaptation.

There doesn't seem to be much 'festive' TV though - I'm looking forward to Happy Valley but it doesn't feel 'seasonal. There is a new adaptation of The Dark is Rising made with Complicite for Radio 4 / BBC Sounds. Listening with headphones is recommended because they've done 'binaural sound'.

Episodes 3 and 4 of Wolf Hall tonight. From 10pm, BBC 4. Don't slack now.
Let's assume it concludes tomorrow.

Beat that, I hear you say!!
Well, how's about barristerial Martin Sheen adding ham to his cheesy grin in C4s version of the Wagathachristie clusterfudge - part 2 of 2 tonight at 10pm. Colleen takes the stand for a cross-examination, and hits the back of the net.

Beat that, I hear you say!! Would it be wrong for me to suggest Prince Andrew, the Musical (C4 29th December) as the potential highlight of Christmas?

Sibling has arrived with remains of his Disney subscription, so we're going to watch Muppet Christmas Carol and the new Martin McDonagh film which is now on there.

University Challenge tonight had James Graham as part of the team from Hull. An empty chair would have contributed just as much. He couldn't even remember The Grinning Man! Perhaps he was keeping his powder dry for the semis?

Hull were the first team this year to actually have a bit of fun with it and not waste loads of time on questions they obviously didn't know the answer to. Sian Reese Williams was delightful.

This year's M R James Ghost Story adaptation 'Count Magnus' was disappointing.

Two Doors has matured well. It has transitioned to the post Cathy era very smoothly. It is far more of a balanced ensemble piece now.

I know that Christmas Day night is pretty rubbish and predictable these days but I think the main channels hit an all time low this year. I did enjoy Corrie as it was a nice fun episode but that was it. I ended up watching the whole of series 3 of Emily In Paris on Netflix.

Best festive TV I’ve watched this year: - Ghosts - Motherland - Detectorists - Gone Fishing (especially for Ted the dog) - University Challenge (like it much better to the usual non-festive version)

Detectorists: even out of focus, Dr Alice Roberts on the steps of the British Museum was a nice touch ..

Maybe not technically festive telly but just watched Glass Onion and it was a thoroughly enjoyable camp romp.
Well constructed writing. Nicely subversive.
Good follow on to Knives Out

I had never watched Death in Paradise, but I love a good murder mystery and last night's Christmas special promised a cameo from Les Dennis, so I decided to see what all the fuss was about.
Imdb gives the series as a whole an exceptionally high 7.8 rating. Twitter is fulsomely positive about the latest episode. So I'm rather scratching my head as to how others are seeing excellence in what I found to be utter dross.
The plot, the dialogue, the acting, the direction, the editing: there were no redeeming features, laughably bad in places. I've seen Ralf Little, Don Warrington and Les Dennis on stage, and they each acquitted themselves competently, so the biggest mystery is how it all went so wrong here. Was it lack of budget, or just amateurs in charge? Yet there are legions of fans who adore this programme. I didn't get it.
By contrast, I did enjoy the 1974 film of And Then There Were None on Talking Pictures on Christmas Day night. Not because that was any good, but because it was so deliciously bad. The action is transferred to a hotel in the Iranian desert that is plagued with thunder and lightning in a cloudless sky. Apparently it was pulled from London cinemas after just one week on original release. It really deserves a cult following.
My best Xmas tv: Inside No. 9: The Bones of St. Nicholas Only Connect Christmas Specials (two to go still)

Good follow on to Knives Out I thought Glass Onion took a while to get going and I wasn’t too keen on the beginning scenes with it being set during Covid, wearing masks etc (I don’t want to be reminded of this when watching a film). Overall it was smartly done and I would watch it again. Not quite as good as the first Knives Out.

One of the best things I've seen in the last few days is The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special (Disney channel). Haven't seen this promo'd anywhere but thought it very good. Only 45mins (and not animated, only the first few mins). Made me laugh.

I've been watching The Weakest Link and it is shocking how bad the general knowledge on offer has been. I watched it yesterday and was quite surprised myself. Made up of daytime TV stars, mostly journalist types, they were only getting 2 or 3 in a row. Hilariously awkward bit where Charlie Stayt was asked the surname of the presenter of Steph’s Packed Lunch. They worked together for years on BBC Breakfast, so an easy question you’d think. No. Took him an age to come up with “McGovern.” Shocking.

No. Took him an age to come up with “McGovern.” Shocking. Journalists and doctors are the ones who tend to do badly on gameshows whereas comedians and some actors do well. The corker they had the other day was Tasha from Love Island saying that the British and French aircraft that hit Mach 2 was Jet2!! Although Hidden Cupboard yesterday from Dr Punnam was a close second.
