Anyone fortunate enough to see her exit the Prince Edward stage door in Frith Street during Mary Poppins must have felt such a warmth from her; Through work, I saw her several times and she never failed to pause and sign autographs for anyone waiting before being escorted into her car. She still has the most bright and attentive eyes, sometimes partially hidden beneath an immaculate fedora she'd wear, along with a loose-fitting track-suit or downtime clothes having just finished a performance. It is indeed a shame that she hasn't been made a dame but I imagine it's something she'd just shrug off as simply not meant to be. Have to agree. I have met Petula several times and she never disappointed. She certainly was never a diva and always underestimated her achievements.

I caught "I Know a Place" on the radio earlier today, and I was struck by the perfection of Petula's vocals in this superb, Tony-Hatch-penned, slice of 60s pop. Her back catalogue is superb, At the highlight of her pop career she produced so many great pop songs. Her recordings in various languages run into thousands.

I have been fortunate to see this wonderful lady 5 times:
22 August 1981 Maria in The Sound of Music at the Apollo Victoria, London and again at the same venue on 3 April 1982 15 December 1993 Mrs Johnston in Blood Brothers at the Music Box, New York (with David and Sean Cassidy as the twins) 23 November 1996 Norma Desmond in Sunset Boulevard at the Adelphi Theatre In concert on 12 May 2002 at the New Victoria Theatre, Woking and in concert again on 26 November 2006 at Drury Lane Theatre.
An amazing voice and huge selection of hit records. She really should be a Dame. Don't Sleep in the Subway is one of my favourite songs of all time - superb lyrics superbly sung.

Did anyone catch her singing "my favourite things" with Mary Martin on BBC2 at the weekend? I'd never seen it before, it was lovely.
